Ah, it's too late at night to add anything of substance to this thread. Thank you for the philosophy discussion, which I read with interest; for 'I sit beside the fire and think' (which I love); for 'In Western Lands Beneath the Sun' (the thing I'm looking forward to most in ROTK) and for all the off-topicness and swooning, as well as the re-emergence of the bosoms discussion. I didn't even go there last time, and I won't this time either!

Okay, I didn't go to bed. I'm wandering around KD again. Big surprise.

All I want to say is - I don't want to hear one more word claiming blame, or wondering what particular conversation or comment or post it was that set it all off. It wasn't one post, or one discussion, or even one thread. It was all of fandom, over a period of time. I lurked in most of the threads - except for the few exclusive role-play ones, they all did some variation and mix of character / actor / other movies / poster's personal lives / lit / movie / hi-how-are-ya / philosophy / silliness / etc etc etc., just like the Harem. A rollicking good time, if you ask me, and I don't regret it. I'm gonna keep a trout handy for anyone who tries to make it their fault.

But I'm afraid I'm now going to have to go back and find out what I named my bosoms - we rarely have intelligible conversations, so I have forgotten their names...

Psssst .... Ariel -- it was a really late day at work today (10:30pm ) -- but I read your story and it was lovely ... heartbreaking .... sweet .... Thank you for sharing it!

And I second Narya's comment -- it's easy to try to find a place to 'tack' the blame for what all happened on the blue pages .... but truly it was a combination of all sorts of things -- no one here is to blame. (((hugs)))

And I've said it before but I'll say it again -- 'tis good to be home, I'm loving the reminiscing we're doing. It's much like gathering with family and friends after a brief absence. Have you ever noticed how the sweet shared stories tend to be trotted out? And we're doing that here.

It's also great to see how easily we fall back into the rhythm of posting together -- from the philosophical and erudite, to the punny and light-hearted, to heartfelt and comforting, to swoonalicious and more ....

Before I forget AGAIN: (((Hugs))) to everyone who has found their way over here

I've been doing a bit of pondering over the temptation of The Ring to its hobbit bearers since Merfy widened the discussion to the effects of the 3, 7 & 9. Seems to me that all of the lesser rings (including the elven ones) were made to provide their wears with that thing which they both coveted most and would lead to their ultimate downfall - preservation, wealth and power. The One Ring was made to give Sauron whatever it was that he wanted most (chocolate, word domination, a furry posing pouch - only the wise can tell) not what a hobbit wanted most. The fact is that the Ring didn't know diddly squat about hobbits - as evinced when it offered Sam a big garden instead of Frodo alive again. Maybe that was also part of the reason why they seemed so impervious to it.

You know - I'd been wondering whether it was the bosom naming session which finally sealed our fate The independent focus group which set itself up to name mine decided on Steed and Mrs Peel. I have no idea why - it's not like I wear a bowler hat on one of them!

Not much to add really, but the more I think of it, the more I see the analogies between Gyges' ring and the One Ring - as an instrument of absolute power. But IMHO there's still a big difference: Gyges' ring is never thought of as intrinsically evil, I'm not even sure the men who'll use it in order to dominate injustly are condemned by Glaucon (and I said Glaucon, not Plato!).

Well, someone else will have to look after it this time - I got him back from the Sauronites last time, and just don't have time to run after him today...

Anyway- let them think what they want, they only took the decoy, set up for just such an eventuality.
