Happy Birthday, Opaline!

Congrats on the nomination, Pearl!

I've never figured out why we have only one common word for "Winter", "Summer", or "Spring", but two for the fourth season...I have always heard "Autumn" and "Fall" used interchangably.
I prefer "Autumn" 'cause it's more poetical sounding .

Though I suppose we might also wonder why we use "Spring" rather than some "Ver" derivative?

Maybe Frodo knows...or can direct me to the appropriate library book...I'll just go ask him .

Good grief, I will never keep up with all you folks! LOL!

Maeglian - late is better than never - and I am glad I have gotten to see these incredible works of yours! Far more than vigs, they are delighful works of pure genius! I love your sense of the Squire's personality - they are spot on and heartfelt. I can't tell you how delighted I am that you share them with us!

Opaline! I missed your birthday! But I do hear it was an astonishingly good one! Hmmm... fallen leaves and Frodo - what a heady combination!

Oh, Meryl! You have the most astonishingly good taste in poetry! I swear, I am not the most learned reader of that medium, but I somehow think if I follow your lead, I can't go wrong. I will never forget it was you who provided me with this astonishing beauty!

Fall and Autumn - well, growing up in New England, I heard both used interchangeably - though Autumn seemed the more formal of the two. I personally prefer 'autumn' myself, because 'fall' doesn't give me anything like the sense of the season. I am an autumn person - or as Bradbury so eloquently described - one of the 'October people'. I must confess to sharing an affinity for the season with Frodo - it is the time of beginnings, of readying for winter and harvesting bounty. Of snuggling tight with the one you love as the winds howl around you... Ai! What an image! Maeglian, you have definitely started the bunnies scurrying!

Pearl!!! Well, glory be! I know who to vote for now! Even if you think you have run out of things to say, your posts are always a bright ray of sunshine. Even if we have all said it before, stay in touch. You have always influenced us here too.

While I know who to vote for in Pearl's category, if I have to chose for swooner between Jewelsong and Mechtild.... Oh, that is hard!!!

Just a reminder that the archive is back up and Mechtild's story is accessable. White Gull also posted a new story, but I haven't had a chance to read it. I also posted a little bit of... well, it's probably not fit for polite company, but if you don't mind rather crude humor (OK, REALLY crude humor) you might get a chuckle out of my latest ficlet in the Humor/Parody section. However, you are warned and I am apologizing in advance - it really is quite crude.

Off to wash kids...

((((Ariel)))) Thanks for the compliment! But it was you who thought to combine the poem with that incomparable picture. It's one of my favorite postings ever.

Mechtild, thanks for posting "Lace". That is gorgeous.

*slaps forehead!*

D'oh! I knew I had forgotten something!

Yes, that was an astonishing pic, Mechtild - thank you - and thank you, Wood - for bringing them to us! Are those paintings or is that that same graphic's art process that Notabluemaia uses? Heavenly results, in either case! Do thank her for me!

And Meryl, you are too sweet! That picture was MADE for that poem - putting the two together was inevitable. I just got there first.

Goodnight Harem!

Goodnight Frodo!

Sleep well, my love, wherever you are tonight...

Ariel and Meryl Marie, you're a deadly combination. I just adored that poem and pic!

RL has been eating me up. As soon as I get a break, Mechtild, I will post another segment of TMT, but I'm afraid that's a little lower on the list. But I won't forget! I look forward to catching up on the other Harem works, as well. Cheers!

I agree with Mariole! Meryl and Ariel: Seeing *that* poem with *that* pic, all I can do is ::swoon:: !

(((Ariel))) I'm planning to read your ficlet, once I get through "Threshold".

I'm in the middle of that one now, and a *very* rewarding read it's turning out to be. You've handled a possibly difficult pairing with grace and care, Mechtild. I'm really enjoying the read! Also many thanks for the "Lace" picture. While it is truly beautiful, it's your interpretation of it that makes it special; - you have an amazing way with veils - and words! And congratulation on your "Suave and Savvy Swooner" nomination; - very proper, that. If there's anyone who knows how to appreciate and applaud the fine art that is savvy swooning, it's got to be the lot of us here! Best of luck!

From Narya
Yup. We've got snow already.
Ouch! And here I was thinking *I* live too close to the North Pole - yet we've not even had frost yet, and certainly no snow. I guess Peachy's in the best location at present, her year turning towards summer.... Though, as Meryl and Shelley more or less reminded us: "If winter comes, spring can't be far behind!" And winter can be pleasant too - so I hope you don't mind that I dedicate this little vig to you, Narya:

First snow

The first snowfall takes them all by surprise. It’s much earlier, and far heavier, than what is normally seen on Tol Eressëa.

They wake up one morning to that tell-tale muted silence which only deep snow can produce. Looking out from the smial they can see nothing but white. Overnight, the pool has glazed over, and the snow has carpeted every object outside. The marble statues stand silently balancing tall snow-white helmets on their heads. All the tree branches, however slim, display a heavy white border to complement their original brown, and the lawns present unblemished sheets of pure sparkling white.

It is a beautiful sight, yet it also heralds that the time for loving ambushes is over for this year. There won’t be any more possibilities of catching the Squire for impromptu outside cuddles beside the solemn statues or under the large trees. It is far too cold; – from now on any surprise tactics will have to take place inside the smial.

Never letting such a thought deter them from more immediate matters at hand, the lasses dress warmly after second breakfast, and go outside to have a look at this sudden winter. It is lovely, and very enjoyable, just like an unexpected return to childhood! During the day they impress fairy shapes in the lawn’s snow with their bodies, and engage in more than a bit of raucous snow-ball warfare, and build snow-hobbits of both genders, and sneak up to shake trees, dumping snow from the branches onto unsuspecting sisters.

But the snow also proves hard work; - they have to clear all the pathways, and to brush snow from any fragile surface that would not long be able to sustain the weight.

As evening approaches, they are all tired. Low sullen clouds have been gathering, and it certainly seems that even more snow is about to fall. Looking up, one of the lasses dries her brow, and feels fresh cold snowflakes landing on her face. Wearily she watches this new snowfall dancing in the air, and shakes her head a little, her breath looking like a puff of white smoke when she speaks.

“I am rather inclined to agree with what Sam once said: Snow’s all right on a fine morning, or evening - but I’d like to be in bed while it’s falling!”

The others can only laugh and agree.

“It’s time for us to call it a night. Let’s go in to thaw up, and have something steamingly hot, and retire early to warm beds.”

The snow is falling more heavily by the minute. There will be more work to be done in the morning. As they walk back towards the smial, stomping their feet and drawing their warm cloaks tight, it occurs to them that they’ve not seen Frodo today after the midday meal. Each of them is secretly hoping he’ll be just as ready to retire to bed for something hot as she herself is, and wonders what he’s been up to.

Just at that very moment he steps out of the smial and greets them with a soft smile, thanking them for their work.

He is warmly dressed, but has not drawn up the hood of his cloak. His dark curls at once become dotted with snowflakes, and the cold brings out the crimson in his cheeks and his lips. In the light streaming out of the smial his eyes seem to be glittering. The lasses suddenly feel very weak in the knees, and not just because they’ve been wading through snow much of the day.

Letting them pass by him to walk into the smial, ignoring their sidelong inviting glances, Frodo stands quietly until the lass who quoted Sam walks by, sending him that special smile as she does so. He reaches out, touching her hand, and says:

“If you’re not too tired, dear, perhaps you’d like to accompany me on an evening stroll in the snow? It may prove quite surprisingly delightful!

Though she is tired, this is a request she’s been both hoping for and dreaming of. Smiling warmly at him, she takes his arm and walks with him back down the steps, into the softly falling snow and the deepening darkness, as the door to the smial closes behind the rest of the lasses, leaving the two of them alone outside.

They walk along the main pathway, then cross one of the lawns and follow one of the thick hedges. The falling snow mutes their steps, and they do not speak. Everything is silent.

On the other side, out of view from the smial, to her surprise she can see lights flickering through the snow. Drawing nearer, the lights turn out to be small domed lanterns made entirely out of snow-balls and forming a circle in the field, their candles within radiating a pleasantly flickering snow-muted light. In the middle of the circle of lanterns there is a larger domed shape, like a huge bowl of snow, turned up-side down.

She looks at him in wonder. It’s like a scene from an elvish tale of enchantment!

“This is called an igloo,” he explains. “It’s a small house, like a little den, made entirely out of snow. The elves have made it, on my request…… they assure me that it gets surprisingly warm and snug inside, especially when you’re not alone. And they should know – they learnt to build these in the very hardest way, out of lethal necessity; - in the Helcaraxë.

He lifts his hand, gently brushing snow from her hair.

“Would you like to try the igloo out with me tonight?”

She blushes, and wonders if the light from the snow lanterns is strong enough to let him see her flaming cheeks. She feels sudden heat tingling all over, as she whispers:

“Oh, yes!”

He bends forward to kiss her lips tenderly, and then gestures towards the igloo’s small opening:

“After you, my dear!”

My Love in Her Attire

My love in her attire doth show her wit,
It doth so well become her:
For every season she hath dressings fit,
For winter, spring, and summer.
No beauty she doth miss,
When all her robes are on;
But Beauty's self she is,
When all her robes are gone.

Maeglian, that was so wonderful!! I will look out the window at the piles of snow with a big smile, now. Thank you so much - I didn't think there was any upside to the snow, but I was obviously wrong.

I actually have built igloos here, though it takes fairly heavily packed snow to do it, and that isn't always easy to come by in the city, in the quantities needed *. The elves have magic indeed to be able to make one out of the first snow! They actually DO get very warm inside - snow is an excellent insulator.

*We dug blocks out of the snow packed on the street once when I was young in order to build an igloo - the drivers were NOT impressed with us, let me tell you, since we left a lot of inconvenient holes in unexpected places in the road.

Heavens, Maeglian, that was beautiful. Your feel for the mood and look of the enchanting scene depicted is so right, I feel as though I am in it. However, if I were one of the lasses who trailed along inside, I would be feeling quite put out! (But I haven't been in Tol Eressea long and am not as ennobled. ) Did you write a Spring or a Summer one, before I had come to this thread? "Meaglian's Four Seasons [of Frodo]," it could be called -- complete with the appropriate pictures that have been posted in this thread. I could play Vivaldi while I read it. And Estë, what an appropriate poem that was you just quoted, for a frontpiece. It just needs a gender alteration (the verse, NOT the Squire!!! )

Ariel, Estë, Maeglian, Meryl Marie, wood -- I forwarded your remarks about Lace to Scarlet, since she does not visit K-D. Ariel, I have asked her about what technique she used for "Doubles," if it is the one Notabluemaia uses (I attached two pictures of N's, for examples).

Regular elvish trick! Glad you liked it. I've never been inside an igloo - one more thing on the "Things to do" list!

As would we all, I suppose....
I guess the solution is to imagine Frodo to be extremely fair in distributing his attention, and to always imagine yourself, the reader, to be the chosen one of the lot - the vignettes normally don't name the lass in question. Another solution of course has been presented by Mariole in the inimitable TMT - but I daren't quite go *that* route!

Thank you! Put like that, it sounds *really* tempting to have a go at it - otherwise I was beginning to feel completely like a one trick pony! No, there's no spring or summer ones (yet), but who knows?

BEB, and others who responded to my autumn/fall question: Thank you! The differences between English and American English remain somewhat of a mystery to me, I'm afraid. I do know that I should avoid "pants".

Oh, Estë, again you give us an unbelievably appropriate poem. Thank you!

Well, if the Harem gets any bigger we may be forced to go that route, I fear.... But Mariole says that Frodo is up for it. *snicker*

All we will need is a big underground grotto complete with a pool fed by natural hot springs, which we haven't got, have we? Has anyone checked out all those caves by the shore? Perhaps we could just purchase a large hot tub and put it out in the snow. Maybe the Elves would build a nice roomy igloo around it; you know, with room for massage platforms and sideboards for the scented oils...

P.S. Please Do write a "Spring," and "Summer!" I want a complete set of seasonal Frodo.

~~~
Oh, I heard back from Scarlet; her name at War of the Ring's galleries, as an artist, is SCATHA (not Scarla, which is a name for a non-Tolkien site -- "are there such things...?"). She was extremely pleased to hear that so many of you appreciated her work. She also told me her technical steps for making "Doubles" (the one with both a Frodo and Elijah head shot in it, which wood posted, the side of Elijah's cheek bearing a lace design -- vaguely reminiscent of Maori tattooing -- not scarification, as I had misspoke, which is entirely different). Yes, Ariel, she did use an "oil paint" effect for that, but only lightly. Knowing Notabluemaia's source photos for the two works I sent Scarlet, she pointed out that N. had to do much more painting to add hair, change or add clothing, etc. The lace veil that went over Elijah's face for "Lace" (the face was the plain photo), was quite complicated to make; if you are someone who likes to work in this form of art, PM me and I will copy the paragraph or two she wrote about making that veil of lace.
Snow? Igloos? *wimper* It's 90 degrees here in Houston in October. That's un-natural! It's suppose to be 70. *wimper*
Just at that very moment he steps out of the smial and greets them with a soft smile, ... He is warmly dressed, but has not drawn up the hood of his cloak. His dark curls at once become dotted with snowflakes, and the cold brings out the crimson in his cheeks and his lips.
Now I'm dying of beauty. Mm, luscious!
Estë, lovely poem. Thank you!
***Runs after the rest***
Grottos with warm springs? We do need to locate those, and soon, very soon! BEWTE has everything for those who search, it's just a matter of exploring to find!
Perhaps we could just purchase a large hot tub and put it out in the snow.
Mmmm. I've always imagined there must be a large and luxurious bath house at BEWTE; - with so many lasses around to be ... bathed, would the smial really have room for it? Well, I do know about the baths and customs at the Great Smials, so.... maybe. Anyway, I also imagine a sauna next to the bath house.
And I'm sure that in this season, now the snow has arrived, Frodo follows the Finnish custom: First a hot stint in the sauna, then he dives rosy and sweaty and nude out into the nearest snowdrive, basking in the snow for a bit to cool down.
***Since everyone else at BEWTE has gone off exploring for hot-water pools in grottos, they sadly miss witnessing this spectacular and riveting event***
Hasn't Ariel already located them?
Maeglian - thanks for another beautiful vig. I do like a snowy Fro.
It hasn't stopped raining here for five days and now it's started leaking in! I take back all those nice things I said about autumn yuck! - now I need something really warm and sizzling to keep out the cold.
such as ... a sudden, spectacular and riveting event!
That's better!
Oh yes, - she most certainly has.
Buuut... has she ever divulged the *exact* location, now?
PS: Ariel, is it possibly time for your "Grotto" photo-manip? You know, just to provide a little extra motivation for the explorers (except Gimli, that is...)
Here's a nice hot, sizzling Frodo, suitable for melting snow, fresh from the sauna of Sammath Naur....
Yes, I have - though they are a rather long walk from BEWTE. Perhaps we could talk the elves into a bit of magical landscaping so that those hot springs can start percolating behind the smial, eh?
Hmmm...
Oh, ask and ye shall receive, my sister!
I presume you mean this one?
Hmmm... and the image that goes with it is definitely divine...
He stretches, as if to ease his back and you drink in the sight of his lean body straining against damp cloth.... He rolls his neck and slips his braces off, first the left and then the right, so that they hang in baggy loops from his hips. He then begins to work the button of his left cuff and you find you cannot move from your spot. He moves so effortlessly, with such youthful grace that you are transfixed, you cannot tear your eyes away from this enchanting form.
He unbuttons the other cuff and his slender fingers drift absently over the front of his shirt. He seems lost in a daydream and the act of undressing is something he attends to unconsciously. You watch mesmerized as his delicate hands undo his second button, then his third… In a brief lifting of the mists, you catch a clear glimpse of his chest lit golden by the light of the sun through the shirt’s fabric. Your heart leaps to your throat and you feel it will burst witnessing such incredible beauty. More buttons fall to his careless touch and he tugs the long shirttails from the waist of his trousers. Your breath quickens as he slides the shirt off his arms and examines it in the sunlight. He shakes the garment a bit to air it and the ripples of the fabric are answered in the glistening muscles of his back. So pale he is that his skin takes on the golden hue of sunlight. The sight seems so strange to you. You have seen him naked in the moonlight where his skin glows with the radiance of new fallen snow, but here it is as warm as a fire’s glow, exuberant, full of health and the joy of life.
He turns and drapes the shirt over a leafy branch that reaches into the clearing. To air in the sunshine, you assume. Your eyes follow him with guilty hunger as he comes back to the edge of the pool and begins undoing the buttons of his trousers....
I think I have to stop there or else Narya will be punishing me later. (Although, you could send Frodo to discipline me.... I've been a VERY bad girl. )
Ariel
I liked that story. But the ending about his trousers made me think of a Disturbing Thought.
It made me think of that joke aobut the nice lady who had a handsome husband, one day he was the Ugliest thing she had ever seen, because she realized he was Real Dude after all.
Now the Disurbing part is....................Do Ya'all think that this will happen to Us regarding Frodo?
I hope not!
(((Cairi))), I feel your pain...Autumn isn't supposed to be that hot!
It was in the 90s here in central California just last week before the huge rainstorms came cruising through, dumped a ton of water, and cooled everything off.
Maybe that will get to Texas in a day or so...(though the weather map showed it heading more toward Minnesota...)
Ah yes, the grotto and hot springs story; one of my favorite fantasies...
(Thank you, Ariel! )
And yes indeed, the Red Sox were pretty darned impressive this week !
