Hello!!!

Was going through some serious Haremite withdrawal. It was bad enough that it's been a week since I saw those of you who made it to the Hoot, but now it seems that two days without the Harem is enough to cause the DT's!!!!

Thanks for pointing me here, stormy. Hope the main office is up and running soon!

Me no have cable Internet link yet. Cable people bad people. Try to extort huge sums of money from Hewene for "free standard installation". Still trying to figure what part of the deal was ever free. Best I can figure is *if you already have cable in the room* and *if you install the software yourself* they hand you the modem and flip the switch for free. Whoopee.

Since I have no cable in the room, I was told it was not a standard installation, so there would be a $20 charge. I mumbled, but agreed. Stayed home all day so the guy could come and install the cable, when he showed up, he said since there was no cable on that side of my house, it'd have to be a "custom" install!! Must make another appointment, with different cable guys, who charge $31 an hour, with no idea of how many hours it will take to do the install!!!! And Hewene can't get appointment with "custom" cable guy until Sep 28!!

Hewene gets mad. Hewene yells at earthlink guy, who finally contacts cable company gal, who says tough luck, that's how it works. Ask to speak to supervisor. Told supervisor would call back. Say I'll hold. Told not an option. Supervisor calls back two days later while Hewene at work. Finally gets ahold of another cable company guy, ask for supervisor, guy acts as go-between (or fakes conversation with supervisor well). Finally agrees to wave charges and manages to "find" an appt for me on Sept. 14. I guess it pays to have fits. We'll see how it all works out on Sept. 14. Meanwhile, Hewene has lovely, fast, brand-new, work-firewall free computer sitting on desk connected to nothing. Sigh.

How many layers, Erendis? Well that would depend wouldn't it. Now in Stormy's vignette, he's only wearing his shirt, so that would be only ONE. But in general, when he goes out for a walk he would be wearing:

Cloak
Coat
Weskit
Suspenders (yes, that IS a layer)
Shirt

And we know from the movie that hobbits apparently don't wear undershirts so that would be FIVE. FIVE layers. All the sweeter for peeling off. Slowly. And for letting them fall to the floor...

Yes. Let them.

Why look, it's quiet, reserved Hewene! Sorry about your cable dilemmas! Who do those guys think they are!?!?

Let's see...cloak, weskit, Froshirt...hmmm, did we decide if they would wear undershirts? I think not, but I will bow to the rulers of Harem canon on that ! Many layers, indeed!!!!

More HS, Ghyste. I was just sitting here pondering the history of underwear and how it would relate to Hobbit society. Thanks for the info? And PLEASE...tell me WHAT a "VPL" is before I go insane!

The next question we must ponder is, if Frodo is, in fact, wearing underpants, then what would they look like? And do you suppose Ngila Dickson made costume underwear?

I believe this was briefly discussed at the Hoot, but I don't think we reached any definitive conclusion, so I'm opening it up to a wider forum.

I'm guessing VPL stands for Visible Panty Line (although I am hoping our dear Fro is not prone to wearing panties.)

My vote goes to boxers, as elastic is not a technology I would associate with hobbits...

Boxers would also give us all the opportunity to sit around the fire on winter evenings embroidering cute little sayings on his undergarments...

Visible Panty Line! Elda slaps herself on the forehead for not having figured THAT one out!

I can assure you that there are absolutely NO VPLs or anything else visible to distract our attention from the gracious line of the aubergine trousers. And I am certain of this, for, as a well-known devotee of fine fabrics, I have watched this scene many times with rapt attention. And paused it. And slo-mo'd it. To see the fabric of course. The fabric.

PEARL...glad you made it home safely! Had a wonderful time on Thursday...I'm sure I speak for all citizens of New York City in apologizing for the dreadful weather. I'm so glad TH took you through Central Park on Friday morning, and that you at least got to see a little rain-free skyline!

I'm glad to see you all here! I'm down with Ethan Allen's Revenge and can barely lift my head--aargh. J/K; it's actually just a cold, maybe picked up on one of my long rides with recirculated airplane air.

Boxers with cute li'l drawstrings--definite possibilities, Narya. And I'm betting Ngila Dickson did design custom/costume underwear--didn't they say there wasn't one thing used on that movie that wasn't made from scratch? Wouldn't you have wanted to be a mouse on that particular fitting day?

Hang in there, Hewene--It was hell getting the cable thing straightened out at first--we had no sooner signed on for it when AT&T's cable service provider Excite went bellyup--the next few weeks were like an evil dream)--but now it's great. It's been reliable ever since, and quick!

Hobmob--looking forward to your wallpaper! Hey, guys, Arryle has one of Hobmom's coffee mugs--too cute! (And it was almost assmiliated by the crockery collection at the inn...) I'm getting one!

There is famous behind-the-scenes underwear story from the very expensive Gone with the Wind. The actresses playing two of Scarlett's sisters (or friends) were given a complete set of antebellum petticoats to wear under their dresses. One of the actresses dared to ask why so much money had been spent on something that would never be seen, and the director (Cukor? Selznick?) answered tartly (paraphrase): "If you don't dress like a Southern belle, you won't act like a Southern belle. The petticoats will show, in your acting."

I'm pretty certian the hobbits all had their own hobbit undies, if for no other reason than to help with the acting. There is also that special features footage of Ngila being "thrilled beyond belief" at seeing those "50-metre" Ringwrath costumes on screen because they were "so complex underneath." I bet she enjoyed making all that underwear.

Although I know it's not realistic, I'll vote for thin velvet (fuzzy side in). And now I'm getting thoughts on how that underwear is structured. Wouldn't the stitching pattern have to match the full pant detail with suspenders to allow for *ahem* efficient functioning?

This is falling into the gutter real fast. Now all we need is some behind-the-scenes footage of Elijah flirting with Ngila during the fittings. Laugh and lean in...laugh and lean in...

The braes sound like what I was thinking of. Though I've never heard that name before. Cotton.. nice comfy, soft, carefully embroidered Southfarthing grown cotton.

Hello, my lovelies! Good to see everyone checking in. I lurked here yesterday but didn't post and didn't stay too terribly long. I figured Imly exploded because Someone was trying to tell me something, and I didn't want to endanger KD as well.

Anyhoo... For those who wondered, I have the thread saved up to page 300. Unfortunately, due to hoot and its aftermath I had not saved anything from this past week. I doubt, though, that anything will happen to the thread - we've survived attacks of server monkeys before.

I agree that Frodo would have had some sort of nice soft undies - of course with loving messages embroidered by his lasses. I could see some kind of drawstring boxer, so long as they're easy to get into - er, out of - er... oh dear.

You know, I always wonder about underwear on Hobbits. Especially when Aragorn shoves Frodo onto the floor in the room at the Prancing Pony, I look closely for VPL's.
Funny it should be brought up, I guess it was bound to happen, we manage to touch on every conceivable topic anyhow.

So~ I think not the Long John style, does not Frodo's midriff show when the Watcher in the water is holding him by the foot? I will need to check that out closer now, on pause at zoom 3. For a few minutes.

I would think the costumers would let them wear plain white boxers of something of the sort under the Hobbit clothes, who knows.
