Then, yes, there's more....I see Sean Astin's bodyguard enter the backstage area. Jim! From the escalator ride. And god bless him he smiles and waves at me. "Hello Sharon!" I smile and wave and go over to him because he looks like he wants to talk to me and he's standing on the bottom step of the stairs. I bravely join him and stand really close so we can chat which has now brought me within two steps of Elijah and Dom to my immediate right. Uh-huh. Elijah is right next to me, so close I can see the sweat on his upper lip. But, I'm here to talk to Jim, right? So I talk to Jim. Because talking to Jim is the only thing that's keeping the very very nervous stagehands from grabbing me and hauling my ass out with the trash.

"So Jim, where's Sean?"

"Oh, he'll be out in a minute. He's on the phone. He's having a really busy day."

"I can imagine..." eye line moving to my right to catch Elijah mid-giggle and rib-jab as Dom is telling him about some hot chick or something....

Eyes back to Jim....Jim is your ticket to Sean....behave...stared at Elijah unabashedly for ten minutes already give the guy a break....don't be a freak....squ--STOP IT STAY CALM! You can squeeee later in the restroom!

"So Jim, do you think it would be okay if I said 'hi' to Sean. Just quickly. I know he's busy." Because despite my undying lust for Elijah, Sean's the one I most wanted to talk to. He's my age, family man, gorgeous as all hell, etc...I figured I might have something to say. SOMETHING. I might not be a complete friggin' idiot if I talked to Sean. Or so I thought.

"Sure Sharon, no problem. I'll introduce you." Introduce me.....Jim is going to introduce me...I've got Elijah and Dom at my feet and Jim on my left and he's going to introduce me to Sean and how the hell did I manage to pull this thing off?? Well, because of Leah's glasses. Yes the glasses. Suddenly I realize the glasses are no longer in my hand! I have no idea where they are and I figure this experience is worth the price of replacing them because oh my Eru here comes Sean Astin out of the EXIT hall on his cellphone and he's coming up the step and holy hell he's stopping RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.

"Yeah Mom, I know, I'll be there. I gotta go, Mom... I'm supposed to be onstage in a minute. Okay, I'll call her...." Sean is close. I mean crowded-elevator at MACY's close. He's so close his elbows are just clearing my chest. Must keep eyeballs from leaving head because I am kissing distance from that beautiful mouth and...and...

Sean hangs up the phone and tries to make another call. Meanwhile, stagemanger moves in glaring somewhat disturbedly at me as she tries to give Sean his stage directions between phone calls. He's trying to dial a second number but can't get through and gives up and allows stagemanager to lean in and whisper to him. I turn to Jim and smile as languidly as if I stood right in Sean Astin's personal space everyday. Nothing to see here folks. Nope, just bored as ever. OMG! He still has some of that cuddly Sam belly going for him even now. And the white brimmed hat is so fetching....Lalalala...act bored, act bored.... Aaaaaaaaagh!

Sean finishes with the stage manager and looks as if he's going to ascend the rest of the steps but Jim speaks up, bless him again, and says, "Sean, this is Sharon, she'd like to say hello to you."

And Sean honestly suddenly transforms himself into "meeting a fan mode." I'm not exaggerating, his whole face softens and he smiles beautifully and makes direct eye contact with me (which is hard not to do considering how close I am) and takes my hand and gives it a warm shake, and says "Hello, Sharon, how are you?"

How am I? How am I? Does he want to really know???? About to slip into a bliss coma is how I am, but I'm so in 'outwardly calm' mode that I manage to still have some control of my mouth and voice and manage to form a: "I'm fine, Sean, it's a real pleasure to meet you."

"It's a pleasure for me, too," he says in all total sweetness and honesty. I know this sounds corny but he really really meant it. Like he knows how important it is for geek people like me to meet him like this and he really makes an effort to put the person at ease and make them feel special too. I watched him later do this same thing with other fans at a signing which I'll talk about in another 10,000 words or so. But the man is a saint, he's so kind with people. I LOVE him!!

Sean is now being tugged away from me and up the stairs by the stagemanager who needs to talk to him about how they're going to introduce his film, etc. Jim goes with him, but not before I mouth a "thank you!" to him. If I ever see Jim again in my life I'm going to run up and kiss him because that was just the coolest thing he did for me. Sniff.

So now I no longer have a legit reason to stand on the stairs and I see Elijah and Dom have also gotten up and wandered higher to poke and shove shoulders with Sean so I back slowly away in a happy cloud thinking: I really really pulled this thing off. WOW! I touched Sean Astin! I touched him! Wheeee!

Now, I want to see what I can of the presentation, so I go back over to the side curtain and peek out. Knowing even the WETA guys couldn't get back in once they went out I decide I'm going to divide my time between watching the reverse screen of the presentation and popping my head back in to gawk some more at the lads who are giggling and hugging like kiddos--so cute!

I watch the TT DVD trailer and kind of now see Leah up onstage having her feet done and stuff by Ben and Richard is having the weapons guy do a pouring demo or something. I'm chillin' having a great ol' time when I hear this, "Hey!" coming from the stage stairs. I figure it has nothing to do with me so I keep my eyes on the reverse screen, my hand just parting the heavy black curtain so I can peer through it. "Hey!" again, but now my heart stops because I realize that's Elijah Wood's voice and it's getting closer. I look to my left and I think I've completely lost my mind because all I see are these two HUGE blue eyes coming at me. At me! Directly at me. And I'm in fact, the very person being "hey'd" at. There's no one else standing at the side curtain but me.

Elijah's eyes get even bigger as he bounds up to me and puts his utterly devastatingly beautiful face right up to mine and whispers "Is it okay if I have a look out there?"

A simple enough question, and one that a simple person could answer, but I'm not that simple and Elijah Wood, the elf-like semi-human who owns my every fantasy, has put his nose about three inches from mine all eager eyes and bouncy exuberance and I realize he's waiting. He's not asking me to move or step aside, he's asking me, the person without the blue badge, if he can have 'permission' from me to peek out! I'm totally beyond squee now, I'm just on a whole new plain of squeeage. Thankfully, the silent kind.

"Uh, yeah," I say stupidly and part the curtain for him.

He bends over and ducks under my arm to have a good look. Figuring I've got nothing to lose at this point (afterall he came to me even though there's many places he could have peered through, and I'm now his personal curtain holder), he must trust me so I bend over him just a little protectively as if I want a peek, too, and I get a really really good look at his shoulders and backside before he turns his head and moves his face close to mine again because he knows he needs to be quiet and he doesn't want me to get upset with him for peering, and says as only Elijah Wood can: "That's ****ing amazing! I can't believe how many people are out there!"

I nod as if to say, yeah and they're all here for you, too. He smiles then at me (stop my heart), says 'thanks', straightens up from under my arm and bounds off to sit back next to Dom.

I watch him with Dom and I realize he's trying to get Dom to get up and go over to the curtain, but Dom is slow to rise because he, too doesn't want to make a scene (in retrospect I wonder if they got a reaming for the little cut and run to the Con floor earlier that morning and were a little leery of getting taken out tied up in sacks). I decided I'm cheeky beyond hope at this point, so I raise up my arm and beckon at him.

"Dom!" I call and he gets up and runs to me and ducks under my arm as Elijah did and has a look. He tucks the curtain around his face and looks this way and that before popping back in and turning to me.

"Whoa," he says to me and I nod. Then he runs back to the steps before he's busted.

Just a side note: Both Dom and Elijah are little guys. I stand about 5'6' and I think Elijah came up to my forehead just an inch or so shorter than me and all arms and legs and bounce. Dom was almost exactly the same size except I think slightly taller and a little huskier although Elijah for all his wiriness is quite finely shaped across the back and arms--not that I didn't drink him all in as he bent over in front of me or anything. <g> Either way they both fit under my arm. Thank god for Lady's Secret!

It's now Dom's cue to take the stage and interact with Leah. I couldn't see them from where I was but I decided to leave the curtain and move casually back to the side of the stairs behind the light rig again so I could gawk some more. Onstage I could see Dom standing next to Leah, teasing the heck out of her and later she told me he was standing like that so he could brush up against her and look down her corset the whole time. <g> The WETA guys laughed when she told them later about the booby peeking and the kiss and they said, "You're lucky you got away that easily." I guess he doesn't stop to ask. Hands in the cookie jar every chance he gets, apparently. <g> Not that Leah was complaining! Why couldn't Elijah be that way with curtain-holding ladies...sigh.

So I'm trying to watch what I can of Dom's teasing and poking of Leah when I'm completely distracted by the unbelievable sight of Sean Astin easily bending Elijah over on the top steps in a "nuggy" hold and wrestling him helplessly to the floor with Elijah squealing in glee and giggling the whole time like a puppy during a healthy round of "rub my tummy." My eyeballs melted out of my head about then and my slash-loving heart just combusted. I think I realized I was about to weep with wonderfullness and bit my tongue really hard to keep it in check when I remembered, oh crap! Leah's gift! Leah's last words to me before she went on stage were, "Sharon, if you see Jim, please give him the gift for Sean. Please!"

Sean picks a breathless Elijah up off the floor and they elbow one another for a while before the stagehands intercede again. More directions, blah, blah. I take this as a sign to try and get to the gift and back in with it without getting thrown out because I don't have a blue pass!

I slip back behind the set and peer out. The WETA area we spent the day in is deserted. So I make a run for it, grab the gift and slip back in before the doors could close. Whew! Gift in hand, I make my way back to the side of the stairs again. Sean and Elijah are all tired from their tussle and are now sitting talking quietly together mid-stairs bringing them level to me again! Whoo!

I know I have two options. I can either call out to Jim and hand him the gift for Sean or I can try directly for Sean. Who am I kidding...I'm going for Sean! I boldly approach the steps and lean over...

"Sean! Sean!"

Sean looks away from Elijah who's sitting to the other side of him, "Yeah?"

"I have a gift for you!"

Sean crawls to me across the steps and takes the gift all kind-faced and sincere and I say. "It's from Leah!"

Sean is puzzled. "Who?"

"Leah! She's onstage dressed as a hobbit lass and she loves you!"

"Oh," he says and with me watching immediately opens the letter she's attached to it. Elijah's all curious and leans in to read over his shoulder. Sean gets about half-way through the letter when the damn stagehands tell them to get up and approach the stage for their cue. Sean tucks the gift under his arm and continues to read the letter. He gets to the end of the letter and suddenly he goes:

"Oh! Oh!" And begins to rapidly unwrap the gift. He gets it open and I see it's a book. He holds it between his hands and seriously half bends over and jumps up and down he's so excited.

Elijah is amazed at his suddenly bouncy companion and leans in, "What is it, man?"

Sean opens the cover and exclaims "Oh!" again and shows Elijah something in the inside cover. It turns out Leah had given him an autographed first edition of a Douglas Adams book she knew Sean adored. Good pick Leah, I wish you could have seen him open it. <g>

Sean is just transfixed by the book and keeps turning it over in his hands like he can't believe he's really holding this thing. "Oh!" he just keeps saying over and over. His cue is about up, and he knows he has to do something with the book so I watch him slip the letter inside the cover and after a few attempts manages to get the book into the left pocket of his shorts along with a book he already had in there. If you look closely at the TORN photos you'll see two books in Sean's pocket. See, I'm not making this stuff up!

Sean has his cue and the audience, still reeling from Dom's unexpected appearance is now raised to a new decibel of excitement. He gives a few words and then Elijah follows shortly afterwards and I think the entire mass audience simultaneously orgasmed at that point. I've never heard a communal shriek like that since Duran Duran's 1984 tour. Damn that boy is popular even if he doesn't quite realize it.

With the three loves of my life onstage now I pass through the curtain and stand next to the press area and try to watch Sean's clip of the Long and the Short of It and the brief ROTK trailer. Mind you, the screen was right on edge with me so I was forced to watch the dim rear-projection instead. Not that I minded. Sean's clip was a 3-minute version of the Making of The Long and the Short of It showing him and Elijah setting up the shots, etc. Very cute.

Then the ROTK preview...I hate to say it but I was underwhelmed. Mostly because it paled so in comparison to the backstage events. But it was almost all interview sound bites from PJ, Viggo, Elijah and Sean. TORN has a better description than I do, but it mostly involved not quite finished CG clips of massive battle sequences as PJ explains the hugeness of the battle of the Pelennor Fields and stuff. Some of the Seige of Gondor and lots of elves and swords and horses running about. Then for the last minute of it the tide turns and the music gets all sad and serious and they begin to talk about the sacrifices involved in this fight on the personal scale. Stills of Merry and Pippin are shown in battle gear looking devastated, and then some very pitiful shots of Frodo looking upwards toward Shelob I assume. Elijah talks about the destruction of Frodo's soul which got me all weepy and they showed a few brief clips of him and Sam in dark places and in particular the briar patch from Journey to the Crossroads! So hey, they filmed that! Cool! Nothing of them on the Gorgoroth or near Mt. Doom. No Cirith Ungol, no naked Frodo. Nothing. Keeping that all secret. Mostly it was horses and cobblestones and battle battle battle. Oh well, did I mention I got to hold a curtain for Elijah?

On Sunday I got to meet Sean Astin again because surprise! he was on the floor signing autographs all day long! Poor thing. I told him how much I appreciated his portrayal of Sam and how much I was looking forward to his performance in the final film, knowing what Sam has to go through. And he smiled all shy as he signed my FOTR poster and said he hoped I wouldn't be disappointed. As if!

On the previous Friday I got to interview Andy Serkis and Richard Taylor on our cameras and Andy was as sincere and sweet and funny as the rest of them. He even did Gollum for us into the camera. <g> Richard, when asked who his favorite character was in the films answered it had to Sam, because of the courage and difficulties he must face and overcome, but especially for Sean's performance to which he said, 'look to see him at the academy awards nominated for Best Supporting Actor.' Yeah, Richard was dead serious, he's that good. Whimper....

Now excuse me while I go squee someplace private and away from frightened neighbors.

A happily exhausted Comic-Con visitor and filmmaker and pervy hobbit fancier,
Sharon/europanya

:Obsessive geek hobbit lover mode: Wow. Oh, wow. You are the luckiest person on the face of the earth, not to mention the slyest. I'm crying right now, and I don't have a clue why. If I had been there, I wouldn't have even gotten to backstage, much less been coherent by the time Elijah wanted to look out the curtain . . . In fact, I may just have fainted, preferably into his arms. The 'escape' scene was priceless. Wow. That's amazing. I can't believe you met three of the hobbit boys. Sean sounds just as sweet as I thought he'd be, and, and . . . I'm squeeing just thinking about it. Wow. Amazing. :End Obsessive geek hobbit lover mode:

I'm going to lie down now. . . .

Elda, enlarge that image about twice, trim the hair, make the ears slightly less pointy, add a dabble of dark facial hair, now move your face until your nose begins to pick up lint off your computer screen. THAT'S how close. He BREATHED ON ME. Twice!
When he asked to peek and when he smiled and said, "thanks."

I wish I could say that I smelled him, but he didn't smell like anything in particular. But I was certainly close enough to all three of them to inhale....

I'm still standing. But there was a moment during the wrestling when I thought I was going to come apart. But somehow didn't.

Squeeeeee!

I think I am beginning to understand why every single flaming fangirl asks the same question "Are his eyes really THAT blue?", because I want to ask the same thing, essentially. Does he REALLY look as good as on all the pictures? Is he really THAT beautiful in person? no, he could not possibly be... He is a mere mortal, just like us, is he? IS HE????

Is he that beautiful?

Snort? You want to know if his eyes are that blue? Honey I saw them coming at me from 60 feet away. All I saw were EYES! YES they are that blue. And YES his skin is that pale and flawless. I think he's one of the few celebs who are actually MORE gorgeous in person than on screen. I just about combusted, he's so beautiful he's painful to look at, not that I was going to turn away at all!

And YES he's a total sweetheart because I got to watch him just pal around with Sean and Dom, no cameras, no fans, just them. And that more than anything was such a joy to see. They all love each other so much. He and Dom have a college-guy best buddy kind of interaction, whereas Sean is clearly the big older protective loving brother type. And Elijah, he just loves everything and everybody. Like I said. A puppy. Excited curious, polite as all heck and sincere, they're all so sincere.

More later, got to get to work now!!!

Eeeeeeee!

Listen, when I was in that restaurant in NY that Elwood frequents, the waiter said his eyes were so blue you could hardly look at him. And this was a GUY saying that, who struck me as a STRAIGHT GUY. So I don't doubt for a minute that he is unbearably blue-eyed beautiful. OH GOD. Euro...you have been touched by the gods.

OH MY GOD! Europanya! WOW!
Isn’t Sean an Angel? Isn’t he just the cutest, sweetest, nicest, most wonderfulest thing you’ve ever seen? And just like you said; gorgeous as all hell!

quote:
"Yeah Mom, I know, I'll be there. I gotta go, Mom... I'm supposed to be onstage in a minute. Okay, I'll call her...."
SQUEEE! Isn’t that so SWEET!
He was talking to his mom. AWWWWWWWWW!

quote:
And Sean honestly suddenly transforms himself into "meeting a fan mode." I'm not exaggerating, his whole face softens and he smiles beautifully and makes direct eye contact with me (which is hard not to do considering how close I am) and takes my hand and gives it a warm shake

I am also among the blessed who have gotten to meet Sean, Europanya. I’ve seen that look. (sigh!) It made me just want to melt.

quote:
Richard, when asked who his favorite character was in the films answered it had to Sam, because of the courage and difficulties he must face and overcome, but especially for Sean's performance to which he said, 'look to see him at the academy awards nominated for Best Supporting Actor.' Yeah, Richard was dead serious, he's that good.

Oh, I hope, I hope, I hope! And not to just see him there, but to see him with Oscar in hand.

Thanks Europanya, for telling us about your great adventure, and in such wonderful detail. (((((Europanya)))))

Thanks Elenya, for directing me over here to see it.(((((Elenya)))))

Europanya, If you want to talk more Sean, and Sam, you’re more than welcome to come on over to the Goonie’s Garden here in the Community Café. We’d love to hear from ya.

Oh yes, and since this is a Frodo thread, let me just say:
FRODO LIVES!

OK, gotta say here, I'm *not* a squeeing fangirl type. Nope, not me! But I'll tell you, reading that report by Europanya, I know that if I'd been in her place, I'd have *transformed* into a squeeing fangirl! OME, what an experience! Thanks so much for sharing that with us! I've never wanted to go SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
so much in my life! You go girl! We're all living vicariously through you!

Hewene

edit: Freak, I was so distracted I almost forgot to ask: was there someone besides queenie who was looking for a Frodoll? I can't remember. Because my local KayBee has 2 (!) Frodolls as of 9pm tonight. They're $28 bucks apiece but I'd be happy to procure one for someone iffen they really wanted...
