Where's
Ariel? She hasn't sounded quite right these days. I hope all this angst
cheers her up. (yeah I know that sounds counterintuitive, but, come on, it's
Ariel. ) quote: Originally posted by Eldalieva
What a harrowing image for a poster.
You got that right. It's harrowing enough to really give me hope about RotK.
After Fellowship came out, I blathered on for months about how risky
the acting in FotR was, where all the actors showed love for each other...(I
guess you all remember it.) Whereas TTT didn't have nearly the risk or emotion.
And the official posters reflected that. The TTT posters were all obviously
posed promo shots, people in pretty costumes with swords and honorable facial
expressions. In other words, standard sanitized fantasy fare.
The first RotK poster with Aragorn was very well composed, but it was still bloodless and heroic.
But.. THIS poster! And don't forget the one with Sam and Frodo, notice
the higher resolution. Of course, we're fans, but please think about the
general public here. What movie theatre owner is going to put THAT up in
his hallway, high resolution, backlit, 27 inches by 40 inches high? Would
you want kids skipping merrily out of movies like Freaky Friday and Finding
Nemo to be confronted with Bloody Frodo? This is mighty brave of New Line to be releasing this as an official poster.
If theatres were to put this up, New Line would be risking box office,*
because really, if you don't know the story, would YOU go see this movie?
Even horror movie posters are more restrained with their gore.
But...I have to marvel at New Line's courage here. It reminds me very
much of the risky emotion of FotR, to risk box office with these images.
If New Line is willing to take chances on making THAT an official image,
backlit in high resolution 27 inches by forty inches high, imagine what they
will let PJ do with the RotK trailer, not to mention RotK itself.
------------
*I do give credit to New Line for releasing FIVE posters at
once, probably so theatres owners can choose which poster to put up. I'm
sure we'll be seeing plenty of Gollums up in the googleplex hallways, and
never see Bloody Frodo. However, it's still pretty couragous of New Line
to do this.

Then Gandalf, as if he were their esquire, knelt and gilt the sword-belts about [Frodo].
Sam: Easy on the goods, darlin. If you try anything I'll kill you --- RotK meets PotC .
