I am fairly certain that anything that goes to New Line Cinema signed "Frodo's Harem" would cause a huge hole to open in the earth that would swallow all of us alive.

I'd keep it short and to the point, and just reiterate what we've been saying here, without getting too soppy. I think the points to concentrate on would be how courageous it was of them to select such a powerful image for the first posters of this film, and how that image conveys so much of the theme of sacrifice that is at the heart of LoTR.

It's a pity that the folks in the marketing department don't have control over what goes into the final cut, but we can give New Line the hint that the selection of this image has given a lot of viewers hope that RoTK will be everything that it should be.

Yes, precious, I have ordered the Poster. I have nowhere to put it, but I MUST HAVE IT. Also posted a comment on the TORN chat thread but have no idea how to make it clickable so everyone can see my whole comment. Can anyone who is in on this mystery tell me how to do it?

Re: letter. If it must be done, I go with what Pearl and Elda said. However, if Europanya knows the people in question, it might be just as nice to have her tell them in person. The chat thread at TORN is good for individual comments. I'm sure NL must check that.

Thanks, everybody, for your nice comments on the Play. I know now why Peachy writes so much of this stuff. It's fun! I did tell Euro to go ahead and send it to NL. The idea of RT possibly seeing something I wrote is just too tempting. Oh the glory of it!

Maeg, I saw your analysis of the Picture in the Faculty, and I agree. Very insightful, as always.

Anais! Come out of the shower now, dearie. You're looking a bit pruny.

Perhaps the letter could just be signed by some folks who really appreciate the character of Frodo and then our names (if we be so brave)...I certainly wouldn't mind.

Hewene, I am a writer/editor so I'd be glad to help with any edits.

Have a good weekend Lily! Hopefully you'll have a little something in your mailbox when you get back.

Could someone post the link where we can make the comments on the poster...I may have missed that.

Is the HALFing in any way anatomically correct? (Go on -- I know you've looked!) I seem to remember that he has a cloth body, though, so expect not. (Looks at Hewene's new icon) Glad to see you've changed your mind about seeing that pic. See -- it really was too good miss!

BTW, Nivina's and Hewene's icons come up as having noticably different colouring (on my screen, at least), so IMHO I don't think it'll cause confusion if you both want to keep them.

Re: A letter to NL -- Well, I agree about not signing it "Frodo's Harem". (We know we're not loonies, but ... )
quote:
Pearl: With grateful thanks from the Frodo-Fans of Khazad-dum.com.
This sounds good -- not too obviously loony , and sufficiently anonymous for those who don't want to be identified individually.

As far as the content goes I like what Elda suggests, plus maybe working in a hint that we hope that the movie will have the same sort of power as the poster? (What I'm getting at is that as well as praising the people who created the image, we should try to include some sort of message that might be passed on to the 'higher-ups' to let them know that they've made the 'right' choice in selecting such an image to represent the movie.)

Maeglian's suggestion about voting and commenting at TORN is a good one too -- TORN is pretty tight with NL. (Vote early and vote often, girls. ) For those looking for the relevant TORN link click here. The links to the poster poll, talkback and purchase are on that page.

I got to this a bit late. I was working on homework all night yesterday. First day of school.

What are you trying to do to me Maeg?? Half my family is over visiting, and I'm sitting here staring at the poster and trying not to cry, and you put up that picture?? Now you've done it. Strange looks commencing.

I wasn't so emotional about any part of Two Towers as this one poster does to me. It is getting very hard to keep from getting my hopes for Return of the King up. All I'm saying, it had better live up to the expectations that poster has sent soaring. And if it does. . . .

I'm gonna die.

Oh, Peachy, I was all composed and mostly dry-eyed and moved on with reading and you drop that beautiful, perfect poem on me.

Whipped cream and chocolate, STAT! For purposes of reviving myself only!

OK, folks, here you go, a first go at a draft of the Letter for NL PR. I took bits and pieces of what everyone said, and tried to work it into a cohesive whole. Let me know what you think. I think I'm on the right track, because the last comments by Gladys, which were posted while I was typing, were already covered by my draft . Let me know what you think

Draft of a “Thank You” letter for the PR folks at New Line Cinema, courtesy of Europanya.

quote:
This letter comes from a group of people who especially admire and are inspired by the character of Frodo from The Lord of the Rings. We post in the Online Tolkien community of Khazad-Dum.com.

The point of this letter is really very simple. We wanted to thank you for the very gutsy move you made when you chose the image of a suffering Frodo for one of your Teaser posters for The Return of the King. In the opinion of many of the members of our online community, this powerful image is extremely moving, disturbing, emotional, and embodies the sense of suffering and beautiful sacrifice that is the essence of Frodo’s heroism and the central theme of The Lord of the Rings.

It’s a bold image, but not a “pretty” one. It is raw and it is real. People will react strongly to it. We certainly did. And that is by no means a small or a bad thing.

Once again, we’d just really like to thank you for risking such a courageous action. Not everyone would have done that. It truly has given us a sense of hope and wonder that The Return of the King will be a powerful and moving experience. Thanks for helping us see that hope. It’s going to be quite a ride.

With grateful thanks from the Frodo Admirers of Khazad-Dum.com.

Hewene

edit: The only objection I have to listing individual names on this letter is the fact that not everyone will get a chance to say Yay or Nay to that by Saturday, when Euro said she'd deliver the letter. It's really not fair to those, such as Lily who are gone for the weekend, or others who may not be able to log on until the weekend. We'd have to leave them off. I like it being from *all* of us.

edit Thanks, Hobmom.

Made some of Ev's suggestions. Coninue commenting! Thanks folks (*blush*)

Thanks Peachy!

Yes, HALFling has a cloth body. So nothing close to anatomically correct. But I adore him anyway!

And that picture is an official image! *Not* a spoiler. So it's okay to look at it. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Edit...sorry Hewene we posted at the same time. I didn't realize we had tomorrow as a deadline. Proceed with letter as is.....

Hewene, its *wonderful*!!!!! Very well written.

The only think I'm wondering is if there is a way we can get around the word "fans" or, if not, if we can make it clear up front that we are fans of the "character of Frodo" so as to clearly distinguish us from EW fans.

Perhaps you could say in the beginning..."from a group of folks who especially admire and are inspired by the character of Frodo"

Then at the end, leave it as "Frodo fans" since you've already made the point up front.

(Also, just an editorial comment here....I think you can take out the sentence about the point of this letter etc, without losing anyting)...Rather just go right into it.....I think it will make it stronger.

Just suggestions.....

thanks for writing it...I would have given it a try except i'm not feeling well right now and I certainly couldn't said it any better than you have here

Letter Draft

Ugh, I've really got hit with this cold virus today and am woozily reading the posts. But the letter looks great. Let me know when you're all happy with it and post the final version here and I'll email it to a couple folks at New Line Cinema unless I see them Saturday, either way, next time I get 'em on the phone I'll tell them how much we're all moved by the poster. They've always asked me to keep my ears out for "feedback" particularly in regards to their marketing efforts--if they're hitting the "target" or not. They've always been very concerned about pleasing the true fans. Which I think is just wonderful and unique among most movie studios.

As for TORN, hate to burst this bubble, but New Line as no love for them. Really. Would you cuddle up to a website that regularly posts bootlegged video and art to the masses? TORN likes to claim they have a "relationship" but in fact, don't. I'm wondering how that impression got started since I'm rarely a TORN visitor. I've had a handful of people ask me if I can get them 'in' with TORN or TORN functions via the folks I know at New Line, and I'm always left scratching my head about it.

Hewene, lovely letter. I think you captured the essence wonderfully well!

Only nit I would pick would be the line "very gutsy and courageous move" -- I'd remove the "and courageous" here to punch up the line, and also because you've got "courageous" in the last paragraph. Truly nitty -- please don't trout me!

Lovely letter. Thanks, Euro, for passing it on whenever!

Wow, Ladies! I'm so excited to read all the goings-on about the letter to NL, after my little 4am (San Francisco time) rah-rah posting. I'm not surprised, however. After all, this is the Harem, and the subject is Frodo. We are all Defenders and Protectors of the Squire, and need to let NL know just where we stand of the subject of Frodo in ROTK, as well as the marvelous, gutsy poster we've all been swooning over. What an amazing group we are! My very humble Thank You to everyone who has worked so dilligently today to get this letter sent on its way.

what is there about one character.. a character that invades our senses.. and our hearts and our souls..

as if ever mark on his body is idelibly etched upon our souls.. it is a creeping gentle kind of love.. and sooner than you can say Durins beard.. his suffering, his love, his every pain, is felt by all those that love the story..and love him...

could anyone ever convey and become that embodiment so completly.. Elijah Wood took on a role. and let the real Frodo Baggins take over his spirit.. he does not just play a part.. he is the person..

most of my life .. I have loved the works of Tolkien. but never so much as I love them now.. for this gave my dreams a face...a soul.. a spirit.......

I did not mean to .. but I believe.. I believe that somewhere Frodo Does live..

and do you know how I know.. for each and everyone of us gives a power to his living..

can I go back and pretend that to me he is but a fictional character..

No .. he is alive.. somewhere.. in some beautiful land of ever young..

that he has upon his person the scars of a struggle that he won..with the help of that one greatest of all gifts.. that of LOVE...

yes.. I am a believer.. I believe that if we think a thing.. that somewhere in someplace it can become a reality..

and just like that embodiment.. so too we all here have formed a tangible link, one to another.. until we are all united in heart and soul.. to become Friends..

and in the name of that friendship.. and that belief.. and that incredible Spirit of Frodo Baggins.. I just want to say I love you all.. and I am eternally thankful that one man Rediscovered Middle earth.. and that another man took the vision and created a reality.. and that a young man saw in Frodo a spirit that he could bring alive.. and that in the creation.. we were all drawn together to make one loving supportive community..

Thank you..

Great letter, Hewene!! It says just exactly what I would want it to say, with economy of language and spirit!!

And thank ever so much, Europanya, for being willing to send this through for us!!

Oh, and Meryl, in the Poster-shock I forgot to say how much I liked your five-part play. It was inspired!!

Finafir, what a beautiful, beautiful post...thanks so much!!!

I am feeling that sense of community strongly right now and would ask your prayers for those of you who pray....our area is being besieged with fires (well so it feels)....a wildfire is burning a block from a friend's house and they are all packed up and ready to go with their three dogs but can't get out because of the firehoses.

Meanwhile, a gal in our NW group (and occasional lurker on this board just got back from seeing her daughter off to college in Montana and she felt like she was leaving her daughter like Frodo at Mt. Doom...apparently its just terrible there.

We also have a *huge* fire downtown in Seattle--a warehouse went up in flames an its humongous.

Again great job on the letter Hewene!

Oh and Europanya, thanks for the heads up about TORn and NLC....I was kinda wondering...it seems like there's been several times that TORn has put something up only to have it yanked by NLC within hours. Interesting that only hours after TORn took down THE Frodo pic that it appears as a teaser poster on NLC.

(((((((Ellin)))))))) I know how it is to lose friends...esp. close ones.....but keep in mind, one person is never alll to blame...you have many friends here.

Speaking of friends...my friend and her house, kids, and dogs are out of immediate danger of the fire. Its only 50 percent contained but they let them back in the house for the night...still I don't think I'd be able to sleep much.

Meryl, like Narya I forgot to comment on your play. I was laughing out loud so much that my work colleagues were asking me what I was reading but I couldnt explain it 'cos it wouldnt have made any sense to them. It was so clever and full of little "in jokes " that only Haremites and JRRT fans and film people would get.

Hewene, I heartily approve of the letter.

I am being very good and not clicking on Narya's links. Want to wait until I have the Precious in my hot little hands, which may be tonight, as Argos are selling it from today!
I knew there was a reason why I didnt pre-order it this year.

I need a cup of Elenya's delicious tea to keep me calm.

Great letter, Hewene.

Perfect.

Not bothered by my individual name not appearing: I would prefer it not to anyway.

(((Harem)))

PS. Narya, keep 'em coming! Those links to the Spoiler Screencaps, darlin! I live for spoilers, I do!

Big hugs for all those who are avoiding the spoilers.

... to the letter!

But what I actually came here for is to draw the attention of those who don't regularly visit the Faculty to this bit of news, courtesy of deluby.
