Hewene: Good letter. I agree with Mariole that you might consider removing the first "courageous" and you might also think of using "people" rather than "folks" (that might just be my Britishness coming out ). I'd prefer not to have individual names included.

That poster is truly breathtaking, but when I'm facing a weekend with two funerals in the space of 5 days, I am not up to lingering over something quite that angsty

Hewene, I wasn't online last night. Is it okay if I take a shot at drafting a letter as well? I'll post one this afternoon. We can iron the thing out by YIM tonight if your'e up for it.

I think a thank you letter would be more meaningful if we could sign it with a rough number -- "Thank you from ~25 admirers of Frodo Baggins."

And Europanya, if you see these folks in person, could you mention that the post-FotR promo shots like the Froster and the FotR pin are far better than all those ridiculous pipe-and-feet shot from pre-FotR?

Still no stores in Central Ohio willing to sell TTT. Phooey! They *all* claim --- now get this! ---- it's illegal! Imagine that! Letting a silly little thing like that stand between me and my DVD precious! Harumph!

gods, I hope Columbus is one of those places with the all-day Marathon.... oh, mama! But even if not, we *might* at least get to see FOTR and TTT SE DVD on the big screen! Woohoo! Oh, yeah! I'd travel for that!

Thanks for all the kind words on the letter. Keep it up! Euro, when is your "cutoff" for this? We could probably keep wordsmithing it from now until doomsday!

You know, I have this little fantasy about this letter, that Euro hands it over to her friends, who start reading it, and when they get past "This letter comes from a group of people who especially admire and are inspired by the character of Frodo from The Lord of the Rings. We post in the Online Tolkien community of Khazad-Dum.com. " and someone says "Oh, is that Frodo's Harem?" It could happen! It could!

Hewene

edit Thanks, Elda. Changed fans to Admirers. I'm not sure about changing it to "Frodo on Orodruin", since a) we're not *positive* that is what the picture is of, so it could "confuse" things. They might not even have any idea what an "Orodruin" is.

Plus, if, as Euro says, there's animosity between NL PR and ToRN, do we really want to use ToRN's terminology for it? I kind of like "suffering Frodo" but will, of course, consider alternative suggestions (and if folks really want it changed to "Frodo on Orodruin" just let me know!)

Great letter, Hewene! But I wonder if we can make two little changes:

Instead of "suffering Frodo," can we say "Frodo on Orodruin?" That's the way the picture was identified at ToRN, and also "suffering Frodo" to me sounds like we're just enjoying the angst a little too much. And, this is just a nutty personal thing, but "suffering (anything)" instantly makes me think of the exclamation, "Sufferin' succotash!"

And can we sign it Frodo Admirers instead of Frodo-fans?

Love the letter, Hewene!

A possible explanation for New Line's gorgeous new marketing campaign has surfaced: an article that TORn linked to states that NL is aware that the Oscar voters see LOTR merely as a special effects-filled bit of fantasy, so they're punching up the emotional angst in their marketing in a bid to finally get PJ and crew the prize they so richly deserve: Best Picture and Best Director awards.

I don't know if anything will pierce the thick hide of some of the orcs who vote on the Oscars, but we are the beneficiaries of this glorious effort, and I'm glad that NL's marketing dept. may get to know how much we appreciate it.

Thufferin' Thuccotash!

Um, I'd say get me something by the end of the day today. Doesn't have to be the Gettysburg Address, you know. <g> They just like to hear that fans somewhere are swooning over their efforts.

As far as how much the NL marketing people keep track of the online world.....not a whole lot. They watch TORn time to time because TORn steals from them on a regular basis. Outside of that I know they'd never heard of fanfiction before or costuming or fanart much until I started sending them links as a lark and showed them some of my own work. (And they love the Very Secret Diaries.) Not everybody at New Line is a huge fan of Tolkien, realize. Nor is LOTR the only film they are currently promoting and managing. But a couple of them I know are big fans and get giddy about this stuff just like us. But as far as I know, they don't 'hang out' online. They're just aware of it.

I'm almost done with my draft of the letter...stand by...

EDIT: Okay, got it. I tried to incorporate Hewene's ideas, but also to focus on the release of the poster, which is what we're writing about. Thank you Microsoft Thesaurus! I did have to use the word suffering once, but then I used portrait, mainly to distinguish this picture from the Sam and Frodo picture. For you Grammar Avengers out there, is it "we" or "us?"

quote:
We are writing to thank you for your release of the official teaser posters for the upcoming movie The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. All of the posters are masterfully composed and beautifully colored. However, we wish to extend our appreciation and gratitude to New Line Cinema in particular for the poster portrait of Frodo, who is clearly suffering the effects of the One Ring of Power.

We are accustomed to seeing injuries or blood in the Lord of the Rings images that the long-term fans search for and share in online communities, but we were surprised to see that this graphic picture of Frodo was chosen to be so highly visible to the easily-offended general public. In general, movie teaser images are idealized, posed and pretty affairs designed solely to attract moviegoers to your show. But this image of Frodo is not ideal, and certainly not pretty. It is raw, it is real, it is harrowing. By releasing this image as an official poster, in large scale and high resolution, it could be said that you are breaking an unwritten law of marketing.

But we are not writing to complain. This portrait of Frodo, although graphic and disturbing, is moving, emotional, and powerfully riveting to we who admire the character of Frodo as portrayed in these movies. We have all reacted strongly to this poster. It conveys, in a single image, the full sense of anguish and sacrifice that is the essence of Frodo’s heroism, and the central theme of The Lord of the Rings. We realize that breaking convention to release officially an image that invokes such strong emotions took a great deal of courage on the part of the New Line publicists. We commend and appreciate this bold move. That this image exists as a teaser gives us a great deal of hope that the movie The Return of the King will be as powerful and moving as this poster.

Sincerely,

Approximately 25 admirers of Frodo Baggins from the online community Khazaddum.com

Hey fellow astronomy geek! No worries on me looking for Mars, been doing so every cloudless night this month since I bought myself that nice big fat reflector. But I always took the big red star over Rivendell to be Arcturus? Your thoughts on this? I know Earendil is suppoed to be Venus. Though I don't know how good a star Venus is for guiding sailing Middle-earth folks since it moves.

I'll be hanging about today looking for that finished HAREM letter.

And WHEEEEEE! Major re-release in plans for Dec.!!!!! My DREAM is to watch ROTK for the first time after viewing FOTR and TTT in their extended forms even if my eyes are crossed and my butt is numb. Not like I'm gonna fall asleep or not go turn around and watch it again half a dozen times in the first week. WHEEEEE!!!!! I'm thinking LA is a good place to count on seeing it! Anyone for LA? Anyone?

erendis, I've got to say that I'm rather insulted by you just jumping in like this at the last minute, and attempting to override the letter I wrote, and the others helped with, with your own letter. I think it only complicates matters, and will confuse people as to which letter they are approving, commenting on. As far as I know, my version is the one people have approved, and I am not changing it to match yours, nor am I allowing yours to simply "supercede" my version.

I am hurt and offended. That's just the way it is. And I am angry that you would place the members of this thread in the position of having to "choose between us".

If the majority of the group agrees that they like your letter better than the one written last night, then I will, of course, defer to the group.

I just have to wonder why you had to make something so fun and simple so complicated.

Here is the current text of the version of the letter that was started last night.

quote:
This letter comes from a group of people who especially admire and are inspired by the character of Frodo from The Lord of the Rings. We post in a large Online Tolkien community. (not TORN!)

The point of this letter is really very simple. We wanted to thank you for the very gutsy move you made when you chose the image of a suffering Frodo for one of your Teaser posters for The Return of the King. In the opinion of many of the members of our online community, this powerful image is extremely moving, disturbing, emotional, and embodies the sense of suffering and beautiful sacrifice that is the essence of Frodo’s heroism and the central theme of The Lord of the Rings.

It’s a bold image, but not a “pretty” one. It is raw and it is real. People will react strongly to it. We certainly did. And that is by no means a small or a bad thing.

Once again, we’d just really like to thank you for risking such a courageous action. Not everyone would have done that. It truly has given us a sense of hope and wonder that The Return of the King will be a powerful and moving experience. Thanks for helping us see that hope. It’s going to be quite a ride.

With grateful thanks from a group of Frodo Admirers.

Hewene

Oh, oh...I sense a kerfuffle.

I feel that since most of us agreed to Hewene's letter last night and that not everyone will get a chance to see Erendis' one we should stick with Hewene's. I rather like it's style a little bit better. No offense,E. I just think it sounds the most like the way we all feel.

Europanya wants to send it out this afternoon her time (PST) so we should get this done with.

Adding the approx. number of us here is a good idea though. But aren't there more like 50 haremites? Counting old and new ones, that is? Sounds more important with 50.

Let's send it!

I'm just heading out the door, so I don't have time to go into the 'why', but I do like the original letter better, and feel it is the one we should send. It more closely expresses my feelings about the Poster, and the way I would want them conveyed.

As Hobmom pointed out, it is also the one that most people have had a chance to comment on, and there was general agreement that it said, and said well, what the majority wanted said.

Well, since I hadn't commented on the letter before , I'll just add that I do like Hewene's letter and let's use that one.

Oh, a LOTR marathon in Dec? Woo Hoo! I know that a group in Houston is trying to get a movie theater to run the first two about the same time. (Do hope that the theaters will have a 15-30 minute break between the movies so the fans can do their potty breaks and move around. Talk about a bum-numbing experience!)

Ok, off to gaze at the Teaser/Killer Poster before going on another and possibly fruitless button search.

Euro, bearing this in mind, if that letter is signed with the khazaddum.com addy, are we likely to get lurkers or visitors here who will not "get" the harem or Faculty, who will shake their heads at "crazy fans and their unbeleivable ways", or who have a good laugh reading what is really emotional and sincere posts, or use it for whatever other purposes? That would make me, at least, very self-conscious about what I post here.

Of course, I realize the site is open for anyone to read, but it has felt relatively secure to post here in the sense that those who come here seem to be the Real Deal - genuine fans who know full well what it's like to get emotional about this, and who recognize the sincerity behind our posts, be they ever so humorous or bawdy at times.

Many people I know in Real Life roll their eyes and shake their heads at the whole LotR "craze", as they see it. I'm sure many wouldn't understand the Frodo fans at all and might be quite incredulous. In that case, to me, it's better they remain in blissful ignorance.

As for the 2 draft letters, I know which one of the 2 texts I prefer, but given my above concerns, I'd rather not get into that at this point.

Of course (I hope that goes without saying), despite the above, I am as grateful to NL as everyone here for giving us that fantastic raw and real poster.

I seriously doubt anyone at New Line has that kind of time. The point was not to make anybody look silly, but to let a marketing team know that they're "hitting the mark" when it comes to pleasing the "true fans." How 'bout I just leave our identity and location a secret? It really doesn't matter to them where the note came from exactly. I'll just let them know it's from a 'Frodo-centric community that I hang out in.'

I must say after New Line's experiences with the "really crazy fans" at Comic Con, a nice, well-worded letter will seem rather tame. They're used to screaming, crying fans dropping at their feet, demanding to know the exact location of Elijah Wood, ripping posters off the walls of the booth and stuffing them in their elven undies.

"We nearly lost fingers passing out those ent pens," my friend was quoted as saying during the Con.

Thank you; - yes, personally I'd much appreciate if the location was left out. I don't know if others agree.
Of course I'd absolutely like to express my gratitude, too; - that poster has affected me more deeply than many a famous work of art.

I'm doing as others here, and am buying the thing. Guess that's a language NL appreciates too. Anyway, by the time I've paid the poster and the shipping, import taxes, customs fees, and framing, it'll be as expensive as many a work of art, too. But there's absolutely no doubt, I want and need to have that poster, and I'm *not* going to hide it away either. Eye-rolling family and friends will somehow have to deal.

Hehe ... yes I wanted an avatar a.s.a.p. Gladys ... trouble was, which pic to choose to make one from ... all so gorgeous! Glad you like the one I decided on - thank you!!!

Niphredil - thanks for your PM the other day. I sent you one back straight away but it came back saying your box was full. Sorry I haven't mentioned it sooner and you must think me very rude
So damned busy .... if I don't do something straight away ... forgotten it goes, into the depths of my scatty brain!

Ghyste, thanks for telling us about what Sainsburys are charging for TTT - nice to get a little money box We haven't got a Sainsburys near here but I DID get TTT today in Tescos - it was £16.99 but (although I didn't know this when I was doing the rest of my shopping) as I spent more than £50 there was a discount of £5 on the DVD!!!

£11.99 ... not bad ... excellent value for our darling I think. Oh and DVD Review (UK mag) issue 55 has (not surprisingly) a writeup of the DVD with the most DIVINELY clear photo of Fro on the cover!!! Oh Swoon!! It is a well-known one, which we first saw months ago, but the resolution .... oh oh oh! I put the mag (to my hubby's intense annoyance) in the children's seat of the shopping trolley and drooled over it whilst I did the shopping. It lifted my day and for the umpteenth time I was spellbound by his beauty. Isn't it amazing, after 2 years or whatever of Fro-obsession, he still has the same effect? I get a glimpse of any pic of him in a shop or whatever and it gives me such a thrill and makes me walk on air, I feel so light and happy just looking at him.

You mean they saw ME? LOL...Not!!!!! I was innocently just watching for online reports here in PA.

OK can the letter get sent before December???? The NL design people need to know how much that poster means to us whether we identify ourselves or not.

Let's encourage good NL actions. They come along rarely! Apologies to Euro's LOTR friends there who DO know what we appreciate and what Frodo and Tolkien deserve. This may trigger a Frodo onslaught of things we REALLY want and not all the other Arwen etc. stuff.

EW... Nostril actor extraordinaire!
The crew begins to break up and Elijah looks over at Dom and gets this little minx grin and says "I'm going for it!"And to everyone's shock leaps out of the curtain and sprints down the convention concourse as fast as his little legs can carry him (which is
damn fast) whooping with glee while three security guards all in black race after him followed by the entire line of screaming fans. Elijah, essentially escaped. 'A Hard Day's Night'? No. Lij at ComicCon.

How about if we send *both* letters...both Hewene's and Erendis's...they each have a completely different tone. Hewene's is very personal, informal, and from the heart...while Erendis adddresses it more from a professional, marketing point of view.

I think both are very good. Perhaps each could be signed in different ways....and btw, I think there are alot more than 25 of us here....am I right? Perhaps best not to put a number on it. I think perhaps Europanya might be the best judge of how to sign each of them.

Hewene, please, please don't feel "upstaged"...your letter is awesome and as I said, straight from the heart and it touched us all very deeply (((((((Hewene))))))))

However, I also liked Erendis's too because it addresses the m
